Paul Hughes’ Hayes & Yeading side moved to within a single victory of promotion as United progressed to the Final of this season’s play-offs with a hard fought and deserved victory over Weston-super-Mare at the SKYex on Tuesday evening. The gaffer made three changes to the starting line-up from the last game of the regular season as he was without the services of Cole Brown through suspension and Sanmi Odelusi through illness, Jack Williams and Omar Rowe came into the side along with skipper Liam McDevitt who returned in place of Keano Robinson who dropped down to the bench. With just seven minutes played both sides could have opened the scoring within seconds of each other. For the Seagulls the ever dangerous Dayle Grubb was inches wide with a free-kick from just beyond the 20 yard mark and from the quickly taken goal-kick the ball was launched upfield to Francis Amartey who was just beaten to the ball by Jason Pope who managed to nod it back to his ‘keeper Max Harris. Shortly after another Grubb free-kick, this time from the right of the United box, picked out Scott Laird in the middle but his header was off target. In the 19th minute the deadlock was broken as Omar Rowe picked up the ball in the middle of the park and moved forwards before finding Hassan Jalloh, he in turn fed Moses Emmanuel, United’s top scorer returned the ball to Rowe who had continued his run and he struck a perfect low shot from the edge of the box past Harris and in off the far post (picture below right). Less than ten minutes later Rowe could have had another after Francis Amartey and Hassan Jalloh combined with the latter feeding the ball left to Rowe but his effort this time was blocked wide by Josh Thomas. United continued to push for another while they were in the ascendancy and on the half hour Amos Nasha burst into the box on the left side and forced a good save from Harris and again within the blink of an eye a chance was created at the other end as Jordan Bastin broke to the bye-line and fired the ball low into the six yard box where Nick McCootie slid in under challenge and managed to toe the ball wide from a couple of yards out. Just before the break a Grubb corner from the left was only headed away as far as Lloyd Humphries, his low shot being cleared away near the goal line by a well positioned Ben Frempah and the half closed out with United a goal to the good. The first opening of the second half fell to the visitors on 52 minutes, Grubb and Laird exchanged passes on the left with Grubb firing in a low shot that Ravan Constable held comfortably at the foot of the near post and then two minutes later the United lead was doubled. Amartey collected the ball on the United right, turned Laird inside out and raced away down the wing before picking out Emmanuel in the centre, the Division’s top scorer diving to head the ball down and into the roof of the net for a club record FOURTIETH goal of the season (picture above left). Either side of the hour saw an opening once more for both sides to add to the score. Firstly for the Seagulls, Bastin moved onto a long pass down the right flank however having cut inside to make room, his shot curled away from the far post and wide. At the other end Rowe played Jordan Norville-Williams through but his effort was tipped wide by Harris. Soon after United had another brace of chances to almost put the game to bed, Amartey played Jalloh through but his shot was held by Harris and soon after Emmanuel played in Amartey but despite sending the ball past Harris it also went past the upright as well. With twenty minutes remaining United were thankful to Liam McDevitt, his slightest of touches being just enough to take the ball away from the sliding figures of McCootie and Marlon Jackson at the far post and the resultant Grubb corner sailed over all and sundry and out for a goal-kick. As we entered the final ten minutes of regulation time, Josh Payne played the ball to Emmanuel who was quickly surrounded in the box and could only shoot wide and then in the 88th minute United were put under pressure as the Seagulls pulled one back, substitute Sonny Cox moving on to a Grubb throughball to beat Constable. United did however see out the final minutes, including five added with no real scares to progress to the Final tie of the season on Bank Holiday Monday when Farnborough and United will do battle at the SKYex for the right to play in the National League South next season.
