Hayes & Yeading United progressed to a first Middlesex Senior Cup Final in 12 years with former Brentford man Reece Cole’s 55th minute strike against his former side proving the difference between the two teams at the SKYex on Tuesday evening. With players injured, suspended and cup-tied it gave Manager Paul Hughes the chance to rotate his squad for the challenge from Brentford B with most notably Jerry Wiltshire, fresh from another international appearance for the British Virgin Islands, coming in for his first start since being injured in December. A smart move from United as early as the sixth minute saw Jamie Hanlon play the ball left to Luke Warner-Eley, his low centre being cut out by the Bees stopper Ben Winterbottom as Moses Emmanuel arrived looking to pounce. Five minutes later Romeo Beckham fired in a 25 yard free-kick that dipped at the last minute although Simon Grant in the United goal watched it all the way over the crossbar. Within five minutes of the half hour mark both sides had an effort from 20 yards that the opposing ‘keeper held fairly comfortably, firstly for United Winterbottom held a Reece Cole drive and then Grant did the same from another Beckham effort. United went close on 37 minutes when Roger James burst forwards from the centre circle before letting fly from 20 yards, his shot beating the dive of Winterbottom only to strike the foot of the upright and go wide. The final chance of the half came in the 40th minute and went to the visitors, a slide-rule pass in the middle of the park sent Beckham through, Grant did well to stand up and block his effort with Jerry Wiltshire putting the ball out for a corner. The subsequent corner was played into the United box and put over by Tony Yogane in the centre. Ten minutes into the second half Jean-Baptiste Fischer picked up a loose clearance and fed the ball to Taylor Miles, he played it to Emmanuel and his neat back-heel fell nicely to Cole but his well struck shot went straight into the midriff of a grateful Winterbottom. The opener, that was to prove decisive, came seconds later as Sanmi Odelusi played the ball forwards from halfway to Emmanuel, he again knocked it down to Cole and this time the United midfielder moved to the right, evaded a couple of tackles, before firing low across Winterbottom into the far corner. In the 71st minute Odelusi dispossessed Max Dickov and fed Cole who sent Emmanuel into the box but his shot from just inside was pushed wide by the diving Winterbottom. The resulting corner was played deep by Cole and although Emmanuel got his head to the ball he was at full stretch and his effort went wide of the target. Minutes later a Beckham cross from the right was toed away from a Brentford forward by Josh Lelan in the centre, the ball going to Val Adedokun on the edge of the box, his shot was blocked out by Grant with Luke Warner-Eley getting an excellent defensive boot to the loose ball as Lucias Vine looked to equalise six yards out. Grant was again in action soon after as a cross from the left was met by Dickov arriving at the far post, the United stopper pushing his header around the post. The visitors had one last chance to force penalties as the game closed out, Dickov collecting the ball just outside the box only to drag his shot to the left and comfortably wide of Grant’s upright. United will now face neighbours Harrow Borough in the final which is scheduled to take place at Hanwell Town on Wednesday 19th April, this will almost certainly mean our revised home game against Tiverton Town will have to be squeezed in somewhere else. Details of this and ticket prices etc will be made available once known. Report by Kevin Watts. Sponsors (LINK UP Estate Agents) Man of the Match : Reece Cole. Photos by Anthony Mills.
