Two late United strikes saw Mark Molesley’s side make it back-to-back 3-2 victories and six much needed points at the SKYex this week as Hungerford Town followed Bracknell Town in going away pointless from their trip to Middlesex at the weekend. In just the second minute a poor clearance from Crusaders ‘keeper Nick Harvey went straight to Omar Rowe, he pulled the ball back to Ayo Faniyan who saw his shot strike the chest of a defender in front of goal with the ball going agonisingly wide when it could easily have been an own goal. Minutes later a free-kick from former United man Elis Watts was easily dealt with by Jacob Adams however the Hungerford man went closer on 11 minutes as he curled a free-kick around the wall requiring Adams to make a superb save tipping the ball that was heading for the top corner around the post. With 18 minutes played the visitors had another attempt to give United the lead as Jack Wright sliced a Louis Dunne cross just past his own post. The resultant corner picked out Ronan Silva at the far post but his effort was pushed out one handed by Harvey and eventually cleared. Not too long after United were again indebted to Adams as a neat passing move from the visitors saw Watts feed the ball to Sam De Ste Croix, he put Fabio Lopes through on goal but Adams was quickly out to block the ball wide. Just before the half hour mark a loose ball in the United box dropped to veteran striker Conor McDonagh who with back to goal tried an overhead kick that just cleared Adams’ crossbar although the United stopper watched the effort all the way over. We moved into the final ten minutes of the half and a brace of chances came Watts’s way, the first saw him cut in from the right and fire straight into Adams’ arms from 18 yards and seconds later he was played through again and this time he did beat Adams but also beat the far post as his effort was just wide of the target. Watts did make his mark in the 44th minute with an assist as his pass in the United area found McDonagh and he coolly slotted the ball past the on-coming Adams and it was the visitors who went in a goal to the good at the break. It was to take the home side just 11 minutes to reach parity as Faniyan cut in from the left side, his shot from the corner of the box was deflected into the path of Silva who hooked the ball past Harvey from just outside the six yard box and United were level. Both sides thereafter started to push forwards looking to nudge ahead and just past the hour mark Silva found space on the right and sent over a cross that Omar Rowe met with his head but his effort was too high to trouble Harvey. Soon after Jerry Wiltshire went close with a header from a Cole Brown corner, his flicked effort going just over the visitors goal and within a minute play had switched ends as Joe Sheppard sent Watts through but he fired weakly straight at Adams from just inside the box. We had now reached 71 minutes played and another opening for the visitors came and went as a deep corner from the right by Watts was headed back into the mix by Ramarni Medford-Smith with Crusaders skipper Matt Berry-Hargreaves volley over from seven yards out. The visitors looked to have been gifted a potential winner in the 80th minute when a ball into the United area was flicked on to Jacob Gardiner-Smith he lost control of the ball and it appeared to inadvertently strike the hand of a stumbling Wiltshire with referee Turnpenny, somewhat harshly, pointing to the spot. Former United striker Great Evans took the kick and smashed the ball high into the net to give his side a 2-1 advantage. Sixty seconds later United were level once again, having just re-started, Steve Ngunga fired the ball forwards from the centre circle to fellow substitute Mo Bettamer, the returning striker controlled the ball and shifted left against his marker and rifled a shot into the far corner giving Harvey no chance. Thereafter United went in search of a winner. As we hit 90 minutes Brown fed the ball through to Bettamer at the right corner of the Hungerford box, his low shot was fumbled by Harvey who was grateful to Berry-Hargreaves as the Crusaders defender slid in to block as Rowe slid in looking to put United ahead, the loose ball being picked up by a relieved Harvey. In the second minute of stoppage time the fifth and deciding goal arrived and it was for the home side sending the majority of the SKYex crowd into raptures. Faniyan collected the ball wide on the left and played it perfectly to Silva who didn’t have to break stride before firing home from the edge of the box into the bottom corner of the visitors net to clinch a memorable come from behind (twice) victory.
